Introducing the American Banker's "M&A Midyear Review," project editor Stephen Kleege writes that bank merger activity in this year's first six months continued to be slight. Chase's deal to buy Robert Fleming Holdings was the biggest announcement by any bank, and Kleege notes that this is a deal "to buy outside the industry." However, analysts say Chase, Citigroup, and BB&T seem poised for further deals, and the merger market appears to have been picking up in the past few months.
