Lawmakers Seek 6-Month Extension on Auditor Independence

A letter signed by a dozen House Democrats has been issued to House appropriators, urging them to back an extra six-month comment period for the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) proposal that seeks to limit accounting firms' ability to offer both consulting and auditing services to the same client. Two dozen House Republicans previously issued a similar written request. While Ernst & Young and PricewaterhouseCoopers offered a compromise on the SEC proposal, the other three Big Five accounting firms and AICPA firmly oppose the change.
