Insurance companies and brokers say that the events of Sept. 11 have brought a surge in the number of people buying life insurance or increasing their coverage. Some 69 percent of U.S. households have life insurance, averaging $196,000 in coverage, according to the ACLI. Over the past decade, the total value of life insurance bought by Americans has been growing at a rate of 4.7 percent a year.
