When Greg and Nancy Forsythe began looking for a place to retire, the couple decided to look for a home near the University of Michigan, Greg's alma mater. As with many adults, time spent in college remained a fond memory for the Forsythes, both of whom are in their late 50s. College developments like University Commons in Ann Arbor, Mich., are among the hottest products in the senior housing market. If the college or university is not committed to cooperation with such communities, however, "the retirement community might as well be a hundred miles away," notes Leon Pastalan, an architecture professor at the University of Michigan who has been tracking the development of collegiate villages.
