Despite Some Bright Signs, Pensions to Suffer for Years

Traditional pension plans have lately been bolstered by increases in the securities markets, but experts caution that moderate gains will still leave pensions woefully underfunded. A survey of 100 Standard & Poor's 500 companies indicates there will likely be an aggregate net pension cost of $11.9 billion this year, compared with net pension income of $3.3 billion last year.
