Electronic Accountant Online (01/24/01) Vol. 29, No. 2 p.H1; Lewerenz, Dan

Results from a survey conducted by the Internet quality measurement firm Gomez Inc. suggest that the online investment industry is in trouble. Entitled the "State of Online Investing III," the report finds that the online investment industry has been adversely affected by the current downturn in the financial markets. The study reveals that the rise in self-directed investing brought on by five years of healthy financial markets is tapering, forcing nearly 11 million online investors to reevaluate their immediate and long-term online investment needs. The unfavorable market conditions have left brokerage firms with no other option but to offer comprehensive financial planning services to attract and maintain a healthy customer base.
