401(k) Participation Up at Small, Mid-Sized Firms--Report

A new report by Principal Financial Group finds that 401(k) participation and deferral rates among workers at small- and mid-sized companies continues to rise, despite the volatile market. According to the report, overall plan participation at companies with fewer than 1,000 employees jumped 2 percent in 2002 compared with 2001, while the individual deferral rate increased from 6.3 percent of salary to 6.5 percent during the same period.
