Making the Case for Annuity Income

This article discusses ACLI's "Profile of Immediate Annuity Owners," which was based on a November-December 2002 phone survey of 460 immediate annuity owners. According to the survey, 72 percent bought immediate fixed annuities while 19 percent bought immediate variable annuities and 9 percent bought a combination of the two, which indicates a desire for stability in payouts. Conservative, middle-income customers favor the immediate annuity, with 64 percent of owners having incomes below $50,000, and the study also shows that immediate annuities not only last longer than "self-annuitization" methods, they can protect women's income.
