Midwest CPAs Buck Trend on New Initiatives
Electronic Accountant (10/24/00) Vol. 104, No. 42 p.4; Brostoff, Steven

The AICPA's latest initiatives--one that would introduce the term "Cognitor" as a description of a new breed of CPAs who can work with clients as strategic business advisors, and the other a for-profit business-to-business Web portal, cpa2biz.com--have been bluntly and widely criticized, but not by Indiana CPAs, who heavily favor the initiatives. A series of road shows, called "CPAs and the Future of Professional Services," traveled throughout the state of Indiana this summer, bringing in 1,000 CPAs who gave the Cognitor initiative a 4.1 approval rating and the portal initiative a 4.3 approval rating. Gary Bolinger, INCPAS president, said, "This data from America's heartland clearly indicates that CPAs in the Midwest recognize the opportunities provided by the initiatives. The Cognitor credential and business-to-business portal are two vital components for the future of professional services to not only survive, but thrive."
